To "celebrate" ( i guess that's the word) MLK day I'm going to high five the first black guy I see and shout, "I have a dream!" Even though it's a joke, that will probably happen to a million dark skinned American's today. Half of them not even of African-American descent. I'd put money on it.
Why is it when people talk to a black person they don't know, they feel the need to bust into "the lingo?" ex. Word up! (yes, I've heard this used recently thanks to a dude who's ebonics terminology hasn't been updated since 1986.) ex 2. Holla at me dogg!
What the hell whities!
Why are white people around the world throwing out gang symbols as they cruise in their VW rabbit with 20 inch rims? Why do people yell English words slowly if they are talking to a person that doesn't speak English? It's just someone yelling at them in slow motion in a language they can't interpret. Seriously.
We feel so much pressure to accept other cultures because the fear of appearing racist, being racist, etc. I accept you if your skin is orange from your excessive use of the tanning bed, if you decide not to believe in God, if you married for money instead of love, etc.
You accept me for believing interracial dating, interracial marriage, etc. You accept me for my lack of attendance at church on Sundays. It isn't because I don't believe in God, but because I believe being at home with my husband and son is where I should be. You accept me for not shunning a homosexual friend. You accept me even though I voted Democrat and you voted Republican, right? Hello? Still there?
Of course you are because you love me and I love you. That's the way it works.
Some of the MJK quotes I read today apply to a time of racial segregation, a time when nobody lived together before marriage and women were committing suicide rather than telling their parents they became pregnant out of wedlock. I am glad to not know that world. I was fortunate enough to learn about it in history class, not through experience. We all have our issues, but we've come a long way. We should take a second and appreciate those people that had the courage to stand up for what was right even though it cost them everything. Oh, and give Big Ups to Gschizzle while you're at it.
My favorite quotes from MJK Jr.:
"We may have all come on different ships, but we're in the same boat now. "
"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase. "
I really love this one: "It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that's pretty important. "
Well said.

Fo' Shizzle my nizzle. My peeps feel the same way. Holla! What the world needs more of is acceptance. Check out the story on cnn.com about the palestinian doctor that works in isreal that just lost all of his daughters due to the fighting...they are the same damned people killing each other! I don't get it! I hope the world sees a huge positive change with the change in presidency. Till then, don't let the man keep ya down! I love my boo!
This was a really great thread! I agree with you about the pressures. And I'm relieved I'm not the only one skipping out on Church :)
